Julius Malema, a prominent voice in a radical left-wing opposition party, was given a five-year prison sentence by a South African court on Thursday. This happened because he was found guilty of shooting an assault rifle at a rally eight years back. Many people who support Malema, all dressed in red, came together outside the court for the sentencing. It was a really big deal politically. The magistrate, Twanet Olivier, mentioned that Malema, who is 45, purposely went against gun laws when he shot a gun into the air during an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) event back in 2018.
Olivier made it clear that this wasn’t just a spur-of-the-moment thing. In fact, she said it was planned as the highlight of the night.Malema’s lawyers, though, argued that he only fired the shots to celebrate. The prosecutors had pushed for the longest possible sentence for Malema, which is 15 years. He was actually found guilty back in October. His legal team has stated they plan to fight this decision. The EFF is a smaller party but they make a lot of noise.
They’re saying this whole case is just an effort to shut Malema up, especially since he’s famous for his powerful, often emotional speeches. Some people who support him have also said they’ll protest if he actually goes to prison. The magistrate stressed that it wasn’t the party being found guilty, but a specific individual.A small, conservative group called AfriForum was the one who brought the charges against Malema.AfriForum has often called out Malema for a chant used at rallies, “Kill the Boer,” which refers to white Afrikaners.
AfriForum insists this is hate speech that promotes violence towards white people. But, courts have actually dismissed this idea.
