The leader of Uganda’s opposition, Bobi Wine, has declared his intention to head back to Uganda, merely days after reappearing in Washington, D.C. following nearly two months of secrecy. Wine disclosed that he received alerts from disenchanted security personnel within President Yoweri Museveni’s administration regarding a scheme to threaten his safety, which led to his hasty and discreet departure from the nation.
Wine’s choice to return is set against a backdrop of turmoil, including accusations of electoral fraud and aggression toward his supporters. He has been outspoken about the necessity for transformation in Uganda and has encountered resistance from Museveni’s regime, involving house detention and intimidation from the president’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
